Chapter 310 Evacuation
Chapter 310 Evacuation
After hearing the knocking sound, Arthur opened fire in succession and hit the engine of the nearest orc aircraft. Although the aircraft with a damaged engine did not crash immediately, it still suffered a power imbalance, so the pilot had to make an emergency landing elsewhere away from the human firepower point.
After repelling the orc aircraft, Arthur went down to John. The young engineer had already placed explosives at the planned location and made an "OK" gesture to Arthur.
Arthur gave John a thumbs up, then pointed to another place in the distance.
That was the second detonation point.
He and John had studied it last night and concluded that if they only detonated the explosives in this one place, the bridge would at most be cracked. With the orcs' speed, the cracked bridge could be restored in two hours.
If the two explosion points were detonated at the same time, the entire bridge would collapse, and the orcs would have to build a new bridge if they wanted to continue operating the arsenal.
Of course John understood what Arthur meant, and he made a "received" gesture to Arthur again, but just as he leaned out from behind the cover, a shattered shell hit his lower abdomen.
Arthur heard John scream and saw that he was about to lose his balance and fall off the steel frame. So Arthur didn't care about the stray bullets flying around him. He rushed over and grabbed John who was about to fall.
John's lower abdomen and thigh on the left side were blown to pieces, half of his intestines were exposed, and bleeding was continuous.
Although John tried not to scream, his chest was heaving violently, and he was obviously in great pain.
"John! Hold on! For the empire! You can't die yet!" Arthur encouraged John, and at the same time he took out the painkiller and hemostatic needle and injected them into the young man.
The medicine provided by the Karenya medical nobles took effect immediately. The bleeding stopped quickly, and John's breathing rhythm gradually stabilized. In the end, he even tore off a piece of cloth to bandage the wound to prevent his intestines from flowing out. Then, he helped Arthur stand up.
"I'm fine," John said, but he didn't look fine at all.
"Arthur!"
Just after treating John's injuries, Arthur heard other comrades calling him. He climbed up with John on his back and found that the orcs were very close to them.
Although they suppressed the orcs in the early stage by virtue of geographical advantage, these green monsters would not just passively take the beating. Soon an orc with a huge modified arm stood at the forefront. It raised its arms to block in front of it, like raising a huge shield. The range of human melta rifles was not that far, and ordinary weapons could not break through the defense.
Under the cover of this giant orc, the human defense line will fall in just a few minutes.
The first plan Arthur thought of was to let his comrades retreat, and wait for the orcs to pass the detonation point before detonating them all into the sky, but this idea was immediately ruled out.
First of all, the bomb was too powerful, and if it exploded prematurely they would all die together, but this was not the most important thing. Although Arthur was not a blasting expert, he knew that if two explosion points that were originally scheduled to explode simultaneously were detonated separately without calculation, it was very likely that the desired effect would not be achieved.
"John, if we detonate this detonation point in advance and then the next detonation point, can we still destroy the bridge?" To be on the safe side, Arthur asked the demolitionist John. As he expected, John gave a negative answer.
Arthur glanced at the time. It was 15:24.
"You guys evacuate to the second detonation point and cover John while he sets the explosives. I'll stop them!" Arthur said, handing John over to his comrades.
One of his comrades, named York, reached out his hand, but what he took was not John, but the melta rifle that Arthur was carrying.
"I'll stop them," York said calmly but firmly.
Arthur didn't hesitate at all. He took off the grenade hanging on his waist and handed it to York: "May the Emperor protect you."
So the six-man team was divided into two groups again. Arthur and the other four protected the injured John and went to the next detonation point, while York, who took over the melta rifle, stayed behind to cover the rear.
Amidst the flying bullets and raging sandstorms, York stood with his back to Arthur, standing between him and the orcs. He held a melta rifle, looking as tall and tough as a pillar dividing the sea.
The orc at the front also locked his eyes on the tiny human. He excitedly beat his huge mechanical arm like a war drum.
York's expression was grim, and the corners of his mouth were as hard as rock. When the orcs stepped into the range of the molten gun, he coldly pressed the firing button. The promethium fuel burned in the barrel, emitting a scorching shock wave.
Because the distance was close to the limit, the shock wave did not cause much damage to the orc, but the giant mechanical arm used by the orc to block the bullets was instantly burned red.
The enraged orc roared and rushed towards the human. York silently fired the promethium flame again. The orc's arm made of scrap iron instantly melted into molten steel that splashed everywhere, and half of its body was melted and burned into charcoal by the heat.
After breaking through the opponent's defense, York took the initiative to walk towards the oncoming orcs. The molten metal in his hands continuously sprayed out flames, and he actually had the courage to push back the rushing orcs with his own strength.
But this advantage did not last long. Soon the melta rifle in his hand stopped working due to overheating. York, who had lost everything he relied on, did not panic or fear. He calmly pulled out the safety of the grenade Arthur gave him.
But just as he was about to die with the green-skinned bastard in front of him, he heard Arthur's roar:
"Get down! York! Get down!"
Although he couldn't understand what was happening, out of unconditional trust in his comrades, York threw the grenade in his hand that was about to explode at the orc almost as a conditioned reflex, and then lay down on the spot.
"Boom!"
Just as he was lying down, another explosion was heard not far away. It was the countdown for the explosives Arthur had buried in the sewage pipe.
The next second, the shock wave generated by the explosion instantly blew away the orcs who tried to approach Arthur's team, but York was spared the same fate as these orcs because he was warned in advance by Arthur.
But the huge explosion and impact still caused his eardrums to rupture and his eyes to become bloodshot.
After a while, York, who had almost lost his hearing and vision, was pulled up. Those people held his arms and carried him forward, but soon, before his brain regained consciousness, his body regained the ability to move independently.
In a trance, York saw someone waving a gesture in front of him. It took him a lot of effort to remember that this was the "mission accomplished" gesture that had been agreed upon.
So York looked back for the last time, and what he saw was the No. 2 detonation point filled with explosives, and John who stayed there, giving a thumbs up to his departing comrades.
John was left behind. He was too badly injured. Even though painkillers and stimulants could allow him to temporarily ignore the pain and stay awake to complete the task of setting the explosives, they could not allow him to evacuate with them after the mission was completed.
The young sapper would sacrifice his life so that his comrades might live, proving his courage and loyalty to the Empire.
