Chapter 291: Grand Prize
Chapter 291: Grand Prize
The auction continued on, Violet and her friends were currently enjoying the snacks made available to them by the staff.
After her outrageous spending spree the auction house had suddenly become a lot more attentive of them, regularly coming by to offer new food and drinks to the group.
Violet was quite enjoying herself as the evening progressed. She bought a couple more items that captured her curiosity, such as a luxurious and actual magical dinning experience for two in the best restaurant in the city.
To more obscure items that just caught her attention for whatever reason.
One item that she was particularly interested in was a pitch black sphere made from some unknown material.
"Now this item here is a true mystery to even our best appraisers. It is seemingly impervious to any and all damage, no element seems to be able to influence it. And it seems to have the peculiar effect of erasing any ambient mana that comes into contact with it.
Yes you heard me right, it erases ambient mana, not simply absorbs it but entirely removes ambient mana. We have no idea how this item works but it is both very interesting and utterly unique. Now the starting price for this will be 30 gold."
Curious murmurs rose up from the crowd below as people speculated about what exactly this item could be. Yet no one was able to figure anything out about it, not a soul knew anything about it, except for Violet.
Violet could feel it, the black orb sitting on the stage seemed to sing a song of absolution and belonging. It was enthralling and enticing, it spoke to her very core and Violet knew instinctively what this item was.
It was the void, or at least a crystalised and condensed section of the void. Not the simple void attuned mana that Violet used, but the true thing, the absence of anything that lies between everything.
Violet knew that she needed that item, she did not exactly know why she needed it, but she knew that she did. And so she bought it.
She ended up having to spend 250 gold to put it a curious scolarly type noble that wanted to study it but what hope did he have of matching Violet’s wealth?
More time passed and more interesting items went up for sale, most did not capture Violet’s attention but the same was clearly not true for her companions. Luna, using violets money naturally did make a couple of small purchases. Her favourite being a pair of enchanted earrings that could be activated to greatly enhance once hearing whilst passively boosting defence against sonic attacks.
Rose also managed to snag a couple of victories in her own bids. She ended up buying an enchanted ring that provided a strong shield against magical attacks automatically, amongst a couple others items that interested her.
She was again very thankful towards Violet as she knew that without her gifting her that platinum she would never have been able to afford to buy most of what she did. Naturally Violet simply shrugged off her thanks as she truly did not view money as a thing to be worried about.
Even with her outrageous spending this evening it would not make even a small dent into her literal mountain of gold stored within her spatial storage.
Eventually though the event began to near its end. As it did so some truly impressive looking items came out for sale, from a massive greatsword positively burning with enchantments to a magical focus that could turn a novice fire mage into a one man army.
One of these final items that Violet did end up interested in was a stunning black and purple robe. As it was brought out onto the stage it was being moddled by a very attractive woman.
The robe was reminiscent of a kimono with a wide sash across the middle made of a purple silk like material whilst the black robe itself contained a subtle pattern woven into it with purple threads. It was on the shorter side, only extending to just above the knee and did display a fair amount of cleavage, wether that was just thanks to how to model wore it or not was up in the air.
As for its enchantments, well it boasted a truly staggering amount. Apart from the standard self repair and cleaning it housed several useful features. The main one was a flat boost to mana regeneration based on one’s total mana, an incredibly useful effect for a mage like Violet.
It also enhanced the durability of any defensive mana construct created by its wearer. Furthermore the robe itself was bolstered by several durability enchantments, that when put together made the robe as sturdy as full plate armour, only without the downsides of wearing such heavy gear.
Lastly the robe could also be adjusted in size somewhat to account of the wearers preference. The robe itself was called the Magisters Embrace, Violet did not hesitate to purchase that item as she was eagerly looking forward to wearing it in a fight.
This item in particular drew quite the fierce round of bidding and swiftly became the single most expensive item of the entire event. Every high leveled mage was wanting to purchase it, the city lord being one such individual apparently as towards the end it once again came down to her and Violet fighting it out to see who came out on top.
Soon the price breached the platinum mark. Slowly and steadily increasing in price with seemingly no end in sight.
1 platinum, 1.5 platinum, 2, 3, 4. Eventually Violet was getting frustrated and made the single largest jump in price that the auction house had likely ever seen.
Shortly after the city Lord upped the price to 5 platinum Violet snorted in frustration and placed her own counter bid. "10 platinum."
Once again her voice rang out, utter silence dominated the room as everyone seemed to hold their breath at the outrageous amount of money that Violet had just put forth. The city lords eyes widened in surprise and gained a hint of reluctant annoyance.
Soon after the hostess announced Violet’s victory as she was now the proud owner of one very fancy magic robe.
A few more items passed by, none of which Violet or Luna were interested in, instead happy to just enjoy the moment and chat amongst themselves.
Shortly thereafter the auction reached its end.
"Well ladies and gentlemen, we have finally reached the end of tonight’s auction! I would like to say thank you one and all and I hope that you have enjoyed yourself this evening. However, before anyone vacates we do have one more item up for grabs.
Well to call it a mere item would be doing it a disservice, for this is no mere item but an investment."
She paused then and glanced around the audience, everyone hanging onto her every word.
"This is curtesy of our very own City Lord lady Sonantis! She is offering one of you the chance to witness the hatching of a fresh batch of dragon eggs and the opportunity to choose one of the beasts for yourself!" Gasps rang out in the hall accompanied by a chorus of whispers as everyone broke out into excited chatter about that opportunity.
Violet and Luna quickly shared a look in surprise that swiftly turned into resolve as they knew that they had to obtain that if they wanted to rescue all of the baby dragons yet to hatch.
"Due to the truly extraordinary opportunity this item presents we will be starting the bidding off at 100 gold!"
Several people instantly called out their bids, everyone eager to try and claim the chance to gain a dragon of their own. The price rose rapidly, surpassing 500 gold in only a few short minutes.
Yet Violet was not about to let just anyone to claim this opportunity, so with her usual blunt approach to monetary problem solving she went ahead and slapped down the wealth hammer. "5 platinum." She called out, once again jumping the price in a near unbelievable manner that instantly stopped all others the opportunity to even attempt to continue the bidding.
This time when the city lord glanced over in Violet’s direction her somewhat hostile yet passive gaze gained a touch of interest whilst accompanied by a small but sly grin.
"We have 5 platinum as the current bid! Will anyone be able to top that for this once in a lifetime opportunity? No? Well then, going once! Going twice! And sold! To our most generous guest this fine evening!"
The host was beaming at this point, clearly she must receive some form of commission and she was about go receive a payday unlike anything that she had ever experienced.
"And that ladies and gentlemen is the true end to todays auction. From everyone at the Sovereigns Vault I want to wish you all a wonderful night!" With that the hostess gave one more exaggerated bow as the light on the stage began to dim before she soon walked off the stage as the eventful auction came to its end.
