Chapter 66 The Doll
Chapter 66 The Doll
The sound, like a war drum, carried far through the silent streets, each beat resonating in people's hearts.
Chongyang was leisurely sitting behind the counter cleaning when she heard the sudden noise. She frowned, put down her work, and quickly walked towards the door.
He walked hurriedly, constantly responding, "Coming, coming!" His voice was slightly out of breath.
Not long after, Chongyang hurried to the closed door.
He stopped, steadied himself, and then reached out his right hand to grip the slightly worn door strip tightly before pulling it back forcefully.
As he made this movement, a creaking sound was heard, and the heavy door began to move slowly.
There stood an old man with gray hair and a weathered face outside the door.
The old man had a furrowed brow and his eyes revealed obvious anxiety and unease. He was pacing back and forth anxiously, as if there was something important that needed to be resolved.
Chongyang hurriedly asked, "Grandpa, what's wrong? Why are you in such a hurry?"
The old man, panting, said, "Young man, is Boss Huan Yuechu here? I need to speak with her urgently."
Chongyang looked troubled and turned to look at the third floor, thinking that Huan Yuechu looked exhausted when she came back yesterday, and was probably sleeping right now! He dared not disturb her.
But the old man did look very anxious.
After hesitating for a moment, Chongyang said, "Sir, the landlady is resting because she was busy yesterday. But if you really have something urgent, I'll go upstairs and see if I can wake her up."
Upon hearing this, the old man hurriedly grabbed Chongyang's hand and thanked him repeatedly.
Chongyang hurried up to the third floor, arrived at Huan Yuechu's door, gently knocked, and softly called out, "Sister Yuechu, there's an old man downstairs looking for you. He says it's urgent."
There was no movement from inside the room for a long time. Just as Chongyang was about to knock again, the door opened.
Huan Yuechu stood sleepily at the door, listened briefly to Chongyang's explanation of the situation, and then went downstairs.
When the old man saw Huan Yuechu, he grasped at her like a lifeline and said urgently, "Boss lady, can you please save my old woman?"
Huan Yue was startled and looked closely. Wasn't this Grandpa Zhang who had made the plaque for her so carefully before? What had happened to him?
The old man before me was as pale as paper, devoid of any color; his body was so thin that he looked like a withered twig, as if a gentle breeze could blow him to the ground.
This appearance was completely different from the energetic and skilled Grandpa Zhang of the past! Huan Yuechu couldn't help but feel an indescribable shock and confusion.
Why has Grandpa Zhang become so haggard after only a short time apart? Could it be that he has encountered some major misfortune? Thinking of this, Huan Yuechu became increasingly worried.
Huan Yuechu quickly led Grandpa Zhang to sit down, poured him a glass of water, and said hurriedly, "Grandpa, don't panic, tell me slowly."
Grandpa Zhang took a sip of water and caught his breath before saying, "You know, my wife was in good health not long ago. But the night before you were to pick up the plaque, she suddenly fell into a coma. We've seen many doctors, but none of them could help. I know you're a person of extraordinary abilities, could you please take a look and see if there's anything wrong with my wife?"
Huan Yuechu frowned slightly and comforted him, "Grandpa Zhang, don't worry, I'll go with you right away." Then she followed Grandpa Wang to the hospital.
As soon as Huan Yuechu stepped into the room, she sensed an unusual aura.
He quietly checked each room, but when he got to the bedside in the bedroom, he found that Grandma Wang was shrouded in a thin layer of gray mist.
Huan Yuechu was startled; she had only ever seen this kind of mist in ancient records of evil magic.
He then turned to Grandpa Zhang and asked if he had offended anyone or encountered anything strange recently.
Grandpa Zhang shook his head after trying hard to recall.
Huan Yuechu took a deep breath and decided to try to dispel the fog.
She immediately formed a hand seal, chanted incantations, and a soft light shot out from her hands, rushing into the mist.
However, the fog only swayed slightly and did not dissipate.
Just then, Huan Yuechu noticed an unfamiliar wooden doll placed on the bedside table.
The doll's eyes emitted an eerie light.
I picked up the doll and examined it closely. Suddenly, the doll let out a sharp cry, and then the cloud of mist surged wildly toward Huan Yuechu.
Huan Yuechu's eyes sharpened, and she quickly circulated her spiritual power to its limit, forming a barrier in front of her.
The mist hit the barrier, making a hissing sound.
Huan Yuechu gritted her teeth, increased her spiritual power output, and carefully observed the energy fluctuations in the mist.
Suddenly, she noticed a faint red line appearing in the mist.
Looking along the red line, it was connected to that wooden figurine.
Huan Yuechu's heart stirred; it seemed that this puppet was the key.
Is there any way...?
Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck him. He remembered the blocking talismans he had collected when he was bored. He immediately freed one hand, pretended to take out a talisman from his pocket, and stuck it on the doll.
The idol seemed to be greatly stimulated and struggled violently.
After flashing a few times, the talisman burst into flames with a snap.
At the same time, the fog also became much thinner.
Huan Yuechu pressed her advantage, changed her hand seals, and shouted, "Break!" A strong beam of spiritual light shot into the mist.
The fog vanished instantly, and the doll turned into a pile of wood chips.
After waiting for a while, Grandma Li weakly and slowly opened her eyes, asking helplessly what had happened.
Grandpa Zhang gently helped Grandma Li up and briefly recounted what had happened.
Grandma Li looked terrified and incredulous, thinking to herself, "Wasn't this wooden doll a gift from my son?"
Maybe I was just confused from sleeping! How could my own son harm me?
I noticed that Grandma Li looked blank after waking up, as if she was lost in thought. So I casually asked, "Grandma Li, do you remember who gave it to you?"
Grandma Li shook her head, her eyes still filled with doubt and fear.
Huan Yuechu frowned, sensing that things weren't so simple.
He then turned to look out the window, thinking to himself that he shouldn't get too involved in cause and effect.
But clearly someone wants to harm Grandma Li. I can save her once, but I can't save her a second time.
Grandma Li didn't want to talk about it, and there was nothing I could do to help her.
I looked at Grandpa Zhang and said softly, "Grandpa, since Grandma Li is alright, I'll head back now! I'll come see Grandma Li again another day."
Grandpa Zhang nodded his thanks repeatedly and escorted Huan Yuechu to the door.
Just as I turned to leave, I suddenly heard Grandpa Zhang's slightly hesitant and conflicted voice behind me, "Boss lady..."
His call seemed to be held back by an invisible force, making it sound heavy and difficult.
I stopped in my tracks and slowly turned around, my gaze falling on Grandpa Zhang's wrinkled face with a complex expression.
His lips trembled slightly, as if he had a lot to say, but something seemed to be blocking his throat, preventing him from expressing himself fully.
I didn't rush Grandpa Zhang, but stood quietly and patiently waited for him to continue.
Time passed second by second, as if the whole world had been frozen in this moment.
Grandpa Zhang seemed to have made a huge decision, and slowly opened his mouth.
