Damian stared at the list of newly acquired abilities for a long time without saying a word. His expression remained unreadable, yet his thoughts were anything but calm. After climbing three hundred levels, he had only gained six abilities.
Under normal circumstances he would have complained, cursed the system, and probably accused Rin of robbery. Yet this time he couldn’t. Every single ability was useful. Worse, they were useful in ways that directly affected the future he had been trying to avoid thinking about.
That realization irritated him.
"You can always get new abilities from upgrading your talent tree. Don’t be bothered by little things like that." Rin casually slapped the side of his head.
Damian rolled his eyes but did not argue.
His gaze lingered on [Memory Reaper].
Then on [Mother Stream].
Then finally on [Door].
A bitter smile slowly appeared on his face. The message hidden behind those abilities was obvious. He finally possessed the means to leave Earth.
The universe had finally opened itself to him.
And worse still, he now possessed the means to erase himself from Clara’s memories if he truly decided that was best for her.
The thought left an unpleasant feeling in his chest.
For the first time in a long while, the endless possibilities before him felt heavier than exciting. Truly, the Chapter of his life on Earth was nearing its conclusion.
"You seem worried."
Rin’s voice shattered his thoughts.
"Shut up."
Damian leaned further into the couch and closed his eyes. Darkness swallowed him immediately.
The walls of his room vanished. Moments later he found himself seated cross-legged upon an endless black ocean that reflected neither stars nor sky. The surface remained perfectly still beneath him despite having no visible source of support.
Silence stretched endlessly.
Three pairs of colossal eyes stared at him from beyond the distant gates. Dark purple flames burned within them.
The gates surrounding Asmodeus remained chained shut, but their presence alone caused the entire realm to tremble subtly.
"I’ll be damned..." Asmodeus snarled. "To think that bastard’s efforts really paid off."
The surrounding world shook violently. The water beneath Damian rippled outward endlessly.
Yet Damian remained seated. His gaze met those eyes without fear, hesitation or respect. The same indifference he displayed toward Rah and her assassins now faced one of the greatest monsters in existence.
"It did."
Damian’s voice was quiet.
"All that’s left is to kill you."
The dark realm erupted with laughter. Massive waves formed across the endless sea.
The gates rattled violently.
"Foolish human. Do you think you are the first?"
This time Damian laughed. Unlike Asmodeus, there was no madness behind it. The confidence of a man who genuinely believed what he was saying.
"I’ll be the last."
The words left his mouth like a declaration and the laughter beyond the gates abruptly ceased.
For a brief moment neither side spoke. Then Damian casually waved his hand.
The world shifted immediately as the chained gates began retreating rapidly into the distance until the enormous structure became little more than a dot upon the horizon.
Asmodeus’s voice became nothing more than a distant whisper carried across an endless sea.
Damian ignored it completely. His attention shifted toward the floating talent tree hovering nearby.
A sigh escaped him.
[Lust Talent Tree Rejuvenation Process: 31%]
[Living Arts: 30%]
[Primal Soul: 30%]
[Elder Arts: 30%]
"So how’s it gonna be?"
A puff of violet wind appeared above his head. Rin materialized and immediately dropped onto his hair.
The fox curled its tails around itself while peering down at the percentages and Damian remained silent for several moments.
"We need to reach seventy percent to reach the Demigod Realm, right?"
Rin nodded.
"And ninety should be my limit."
"Technically ninety-one." Rin corrected.
Rin’s expression became serious.
"Ninety-one percent is where the final seals break."
The fox pointed toward the distant gates.
"And then you deal with Asmodeus."
Damian slowly nodded. He already knew this, yet hearing it spoken aloud felt strange. Only recently he had been a suicidal attorney staring at a revolver. Now he stood at the threshold of Demigodhood.
The speed of his growth was absurd. The speed of his life changing was even worse.
For a while neither spoke.
Then Damian asked the question that had been bothering him for months.
"And how do I reach the God Realm?"
Rin answered immediately.
"Level 999."
The response came so quickly it almost sounded rehearsed.
"The same peak your siblings stand upon."
Damian nodded slowly.
Level 999.
Such a simple number.
Yet it represented the distance between his current self and beings capable of shaking universes.
For the first time in a long while, he felt small. Just aware of how much farther he still had to climb.
The realization did not discourage him. If anything, it excited him. There were still questions left unanswered. This was the perfect time to have it all answered.
This was the best time to learn everything he needs to know about this world and how it works.
